Cat Supplies
Litter Box Supplies
Being a Veterinary Paramedic, I want to see my cat's daily output to make sure he is healthy.
I use this litterbox because it has high sides, making it harder for him to kick litter out of the box.
I recommend uncovered litterboxes because:
* It allows my cat to look around and feel secure when he is in a vulnerable position.
* It doesn't trap him inside with litterbox odors.
These things help prevent what is called "litterbox avoidance" behavior.
This is a high-quality litter scoop that can last a lifetime!
I use this cat litter mat because I can just pick it up, bend it, and pour out the cat litter that is trapped inside. I find it easy to rinse, if needed, and a great way to keep litter from being tracked around the house.
I love my Litter Genie! I keep it conveniently next to my cat's litterbox, making it convenient to scoop the litter inside and seal up the odor. I only need to change the bag out every few weeks.
The Litter Genie XL is especially great for multi-cat households. You won't believe how much it holds until you try it out!
Be sure to keep a Litter Genie Refill on hand!
Buying two Refills in one package is a bargain!
Buying three Refills in a single package is an even bigger bargain!
Four Refills in a single package is the best bargain! I love to have plenty of supplies on hand.
Stimulating Entertainment
When you wave this around the room, it sounds like a real bird flying. All of my cats have loved this.
Pro tip: keep it put away safe when not in use. This both keeps it safe from needless damage (such as from being noisily dragged around your house at 2am) and makes its appearance a sign of extra special play time.
You have to let your cats catch Da Bird every once and a while, so eventually the feathers will wear out. The refills will make sure you can get right back to the game.
The Cat Dancer 101 Interactive Cat Toy is an inexpensive tool for interacting with your cat. This really engages my cat's prey drive, letting him get out energy.
This toy, much like the one above, engages a cat's prey drive. This one is particularly well suited to cats who like chasing string.
Pro Tip: This is another toy to put away when not in use, both to keep its appearance special to your cat and to keep your cat from getting tangled up when unattended.
This automated toy combines random movement, pauses, direction changes, and lights to engage and entertain your cat.
Most cats have a preference between horizontal, vertical, and slanted scratchers. I recommend exposing your cats to each, then buying further scratchers according to their preferences. Fortunately, most cats love cardboard scratchers so it can be a nominal investment to try out each kind.
This is for cats who like horizontal scratchers.
This is for cats who like sloping scratchers, and is wide enough for large cats.
Some cats like different textures of scratchers. This jute material is one of my cat's favorites! As a bonus, its height allows him to stretch his body out fully as he scratches.
I personally use this interactive cat toy to give my cat treats. In addition to the treats, he gets mental stimulation. As a bonus for me, the green tubes are easy to remove and wash.
This is also good for mental stimulation, and is a little more advanced than the one featured above. When starting out, you'll need to play with the toy with your cat. Once they get the hang of it, it can be a great distraction. If I am going out for a little while, I will put treats in it for my cat to find while I am gone and he hardly notices me leave.
Grooming
Even though this brush is advertised as a dog brush, it is also a great kitten and cat brush. I use it on my cat because the bristles have coated tips, so that I don't scratch his delicate skin while grooming him.
Anxiety Prevention
I spray this in my cat's carrier a few hours before we go to the veterinarian. I see a noticeable drop in his anxiety level.
This helps with generalized anxiety in cats. Anywhere you want to create a calming space, this diffuser will disperse soothing pheromones.
This diffuser is geared toward multi-cat households.
Dog Supplies
The Essentials
This is a great book that provides you with information to help your dog live a longer and healthier life. I feel like this is a "must read" for every dog owner, and can't wait for them to get around to publishing a version about cats and other companion animals.
Dogs have a much harder time regulating body temperature than humans. Cooling vests are essential for keeping your dogs comfortable while enjoying long midday walks.
While peanut butter isn't essential for every dog, it is essential that if you give your dog peanut butter it does not contain Xylitol. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs, and is in most brands of peanut butter that people eat.
I recommend this particular kind of peanut butter because it has no Xylitol!
Stimulating Entertainment
You can put Buddy Butter (see above) around the inside of this Kong, giving your dog a task to do (chewing and licking at the Kong) and a reward for doing it (peanut butter!). Kongs are especially great for times when you would like to distract your dog or need to help them alleviate anxiety.
Pro Tip: Make sure you get the right size. It shouldn't be small enough to be a choking hazard. It also shouldn't be so large as to present less challenge.
Much like the Kong featured above, this Kong Goodie Bone is a great combination of a task and reward. The hollow portions on each end are designed to hold treats.
Some dogs act out when they get bored. That's where these interactive treat puzzles become invaluable! This is the introductory (or level 1) model. These provide a wonderful challenge to clever canines. The mental stimulation required to earn the treats makes for great supervised play time!
For especially clever canines, levels 2 through 4 will give you many options to challenge and reward your dog.
The Snuffle Mat is a great tool to make supervised mealtime or treats last longer, all while rewarding your dog's natural instinct to sniff. Bonus: It is machine washable, making cleanup easier.
Harnesses and Leads
Kong Harness with waste bag holder
When properly fitted, a Gentle Leader can be one of the best solutions to gently deter pulling. I have had many clients who swear by this, as it makes walks with their dogs much more enjoyable.
The PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness can be another pulling deterrant.
Healthy Eating
I love that these bowls combine food with an activity. It is a bonus that they are BPA-free and dishwasher safe (top rack).
Getting your dog to eat more slowly and mindfully can be one of the best ways to prevent choking on food or bloating from swallowing air.
If you believe your dog may be at risk of bloat (gastric dilatation and volvulus), which can be life threatening, please contact your veterinarian for more information.
This bowl functions much like the one above, but is geared toward wet foods.
Lick Mats are another variant on combining a task and a treat. The dog's task is to lick the mat clean, in the process earning a treat.
Alternate Lick Mat
Comfort and Function
It is my personal opinion that all dogs should have access to an orthopedic bed, especially as they get older. Some dogs even like a head rest, which this bed features. I like the machine washable cover and available waterproof liner (see below).
This is an optional waterproof liner for the bed above. I highly recommend this, as it prevents the bed from being damaged by a potty accident. It is especially handy for dogs with urinary incontinence.
Anxiety Reduction
I spray this in my dog's travel crate a few hours before we go to the veterinarian. I see a noticeable drop in her anxiety level. It also helps to alleviate the stress she experiences from storms and fireworks.
